College admissions strategy for students and families

About Dave Burgio

The person who will actually build your roadmap.

I graduated from West Point, served as a U.S. Army officer with a combat deployment to Afghanistan, and later earned my MBA at Harvard Business School.

When my own kids started high school, I did what I do with every decision that matters: I built a plan. Real data on every target school, true cost after aid, what each admissions office actually rewards, and a season-by-season timeline. Other families saw it and asked for one. That is how Waypoint started.

Why I am good at this in particular

Two things, and they are unusual together.

First, I have spent years on the other side of the desk as a volunteer with West Point Admissions. That perspective shapes how I read a student's profile and what I tell them to do about it. Most consultants have never assessed an applicant from the institution's side of the table.

Second, I am an analyst by training and by trade, from management consulting through operating roles in technology. Admissions is a decision made under uncertainty with incomplete information, which is the kind of problem I have spent a career on.

Track record

Across a decade of volunteer admissions mentoring, the last three applicants I worked with were admitted to Harvard Business School, Harvard's MS/MBA program, and Chicago Booth. One of them drew interviews at Harvard, MIT Sloan, and Berkeley Haas in a single round.

To be precise about what those are: graduate business school admissions, not undergraduate. The strategy carries over directly, a realistic list, a sharp narrative, honest odds, but I would rather state exactly what the record is than let it be read as something it is not. Waypoint client outcomes will be published as they arrive.

How I work

You work with me start to finish. No junior counselor, no rotating team, no handoff after the sales call. I read, edit, and sign off on every roadmap personally.

I use a research engine and database to carry the analytical load: gathering school data, modeling real costs, tracking deadlines, checking published ranges. That is why one person can go this deep at this price. It is not what writes your plan, and it is never what writes an essay.

What I will not do

I do not guarantee admission, and you should be wary of anyone who does. I do not write essays or applications; the student is the sole author of everything submitted. And I do not sell service academy admissions consulting, because I volunteer with West Point Admissions and keeping that line clean matters more to me than the revenue.
